Introduction

K-Scan MMD is a new generation handheld laser scanners for portable metrology applications. Accurate, easy-to-use and a stunning performance make it the most modern handheld scanning solution without mechanical constraints.  K-Scan MMD is the ultimate tool for accurate part-to-CAD inspection and productive reverse engineering, combining the accuracy and productivity of Metris' MMD laser scanner, measurement volume and motion compensation of the K-Series Optical CMM.

Concept

The K-series is used as a localizer to determine where the user holds the handheld scanner. The K-series is an optical triangulation system where 3 high resolution cameras measure IR optical targets that are mounted on the hand tool. The hand tool can serve as a simple probed inspection device.  When the hand tool is combined with the MMD laser scanner, it picks up to 70.000 points per second on the surface of the part creating a very dense 3D point cloud of the part. Software enables to use that information for inspection or reverse engineering.
